Fibreglass pools on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast has more pools per street than almost anywhere in Queensland, and its ground is unlike the rest of South East Queensland. Sandy coastal soil and high water tables on canal and beachside blocks change how a pool is installed and looked after.

Local knowledge

What's different about a pool in Gold Coast

Your builder checks all of this on the site visit and allows for it in the written quote.

High water tables

On canal and beachside blocks the groundwater can sit close to the surface. Builders often need to pump water out of the hole during the install, and the pool should have a hydrostatic valve. A fibreglass pool should never be emptied without advice, because groundwater can push an empty shell upwards.

Sand and acid sulfate soils

Sandy soils dig easily but need care to stay stable. Low-lying coastal areas can have acid sulfate soils, which need managing when they are dug up. The City of Gold Coast maps these areas, and your builder checks them.

Salt air

Equipment near the beach wears faster in salt air. Housing the pump and filter out of the weather and choosing marine-grade fittings helps. Fibreglass itself is compatible with salt water pools.

Canal walls and setbacks

On waterfront blocks the revetment wall and the setbacks from it decide where a pool can go. The certifier checks these against the council's rules.

Approvals

Council and approvals

A pool in Gold Coast needs a building approval from a building certifier, lodged with City of Gold Coast. The fence must meet the Queensland pool barrier standard and be inspected before the pool is filled past 300 mm. Water and sewer infrastructure is managed by City of Gold Coast, and building near it needs approval.

Your builder normally arranges the certifier as part of the install. If you're owner-building with a DIY kit, you arrange it yourself.
