Fibreglass pools in Brisbane
Brisbane blocks range from flat post-war lots to steep hillside sites with rock a spade's depth down. Fibreglass suits both: the shell arrives finished, so the time your yard is dug up is short, and the hole only has to suit the shape you chose.
Local knowledge
What's different about a pool in Brisbane
Your builder checks all of this on the site visit and allows for it in the written quote.
Clay and rock
Much of Brisbane sits on reactive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Hillside suburbs such as The Gap, Bardon and Ashgrove often hit rock. Your builder looks at both on the site visit and allows for rock breaking or engineering in the quote, so it is not a surprise once digging starts.
Getting the shell in
Most Brisbane installs are lifted over the house by crane. Narrow streets, power lines and street trees decide where the crane can stand, which is why every quote starts with a look at the street as well as the backyard.
Flood and overland flow
Low-lying parts of the city are in Brisbane City Council's flood planning areas. A pool can usually still go in, but the certifier will want the levels, fencing and equipment placed with flooding in mind.
Sewer and stormwater lines
Many Brisbane backyards have an Urban Utilities sewer main or a stormwater line running through them. Building over or near one needs approval, and it can decide where the pool sits. Your builder checks the property's service plans before the design is final.
Shapes that suit Brisbane blocks
Where most owners start
Inner-city and post-war blocks often take a 7 m pool comfortably. Long, narrow yards suit the Majestic 7 and Slimline range.
Approvals
Council and approvals
A pool in Brisbane needs a building approval from a building certifier, lodged with Brisbane City Council. The fence must meet the Queensland pool barrier standard and be inspected before the pool is filled past 300 mm. Water and sewer infrastructure is managed by Urban Utilities, and building near it needs approval.
Your builder normally arranges the certifier as part of the install. If you're owner-building with a DIY kit, you arrange it yourself.

Brisbane questions
Common questions
Do I need council approval for a pool in Brisbane?
You need a building approval, which a private building certifier usually issues and lodges with Brisbane City Council. Your builder normally arranges the certifier as part of the install.
Can a pool go over a sewer line?
Not without approval from Urban Utilities, and sometimes not at all. It is one of the first things your builder checks, because it can move the pool's position.
